Pahela
Baishakh is the first day of Bengali New Year. It is celebrated all over the
country with great festivities. People wake up early in the morning, have a
bath and wear their traditional dresses. Women wear white saris with colourful churis
and flowers. Men wear pajamas and panjabis. It is a day of eating traditional
Bangali foods like Panta-Ilish and different kind of sweets. The day opens a
new Bengali calendar and inspires us to start a new life with hopes and
aspirations. Pahela Baishakh is celebrated both in villages and towns. In
towns, various cultural organizations arrange interesting programmes. In Dhaka,
the first programme of the day takes place at Ramna Batamul organized by
Chhayanat. The biggest and most colourful procession of the day is organized by
the students of Fine Art Institute Dhaka University. In village areas, traders
commence ‘Halkhata’ and offer sweet to their customers. The villagers observe
‘Pahela Baishakh’ in a traditional manner. ‘Baishakhi Mela’ is the main
attraction of Pahela Baishakh both in cities and villages. Pahela Baishakh is
an inseparable part of Bangali culture, tradition and identity.
